You constantly feel tired, sleepy, and less energetic even if you just woke up. You feel that you are dragging yourself just to finish the task but you lack the motivation to do so. You would rather sleep it off, but the same thing happens the following day.
Is this tiredness or you’re already experiencing fatigue?
It turns out that one in every seven Americans wake up feeling fresh every
day, with the majority of Americans feeling tired most of the week. This could be a sign of fatigue or the feeling of tiredness, weariness, or lack of energy.
Apparently, fatigue is just the bigger umbrella. Below are the different types of fatigue experienced by many people before it turns into a full-blown chronic fatigue:
Adrenal Fatigue
Adrenal fatigue is a term used to describe nonspecific symptoms as a result of the adrenal gland’s insufficiency to produce various hormones for proper function, particularly adrenaline and cortisol. When this happens, your body is unable to keep up with the demand of fight-or-flight arousal; hence the feeling of exhaustion.
Signs of adrenal fatigue include:
- Body ache
- Lightheadedness
- Unexplained weight loss
- Low blood pressure
- Insomnia
- Skin discoloration
Experiencing any of these symptoms warrant a visit to the doctor for further diagnosis. Otherwise, it could contribute to the more serious condition, which may not happen if you only paid attention.
Emotional Fatigue

Others can get over it and move on, but there are others who started to create constant feelings of fear, sadness, guilt, trauma, grief, or anger. These emotions will keep you in a distressed state, thereby making it harder for you to function properly.
When this happens, you will have a hard time sleeping or you wake up frequently at night. You go through your day feeling exhausted, have a hard time concentrating, and memory is affected.
Can you get over this? The answer is yes, but it will take time. A medical professional can help you dig deeper into your emotions to understand the cause of distress. You will also be asked to take medications or employ techniques to help you relax especially at night.
Food Sensitivity Tiredness
Yes, this happens. This type of fatigue happens when your food is not tolerated well by your gut. When you experience food sensitivity tiredness, it could be your body’s way of saying that you have a leaky gut syndrome. You might have a tendency to avoid certain foods just to avoid this “feeling.”
Don’t blame this on food because it is not its fault. Consider getting your gut checked to determine the reason why you experience food sensitivity tiredness. Your digestive system has a direct impact on your emotional state and keeping your gut healthy could reduce any signs of fatigue.
Muscle Fatigue

Every time you workout, you will notice that your muscles are strong and resilient at first, and then your performance and output starts to deteriorate as your workout progresses. Eventually, muscles feel weaker and tired – a condition known as muscle fatigue.
Muscle fatigue is associated with a state of exhaustion wherein your muscles’ ability decreases over time; thus making you feel weaker. Then there are shortness of breath, trembling, weaker grip, soreness, muscle cramps, and localized pain.
Rest and recovery will help you overcome muscle fatigue. Keeping yourself hydrated during a workout and eating healthy before and after could help a lot as well. In case you notice muscle fatigue unrelated to exercise, seek medical help immediately for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Physical Fatigue
Getting tired is normal especially when you engage in physical or rigorous activities. If you constantly feel exhausted, then it could be your body’s way of saying that you are experiencing physical fatigue. Don’t take this lightly because physical fatigue can be a sign of a more serious condition like lung problem, thyroid issues, kidney or liver disease, or diabetes among others.
If you constantly feel tired, regardless of the amount of force and effort you exerted, then seek medical help immediately. You will be asked to undergo a physical exam and blood testing to check what’s causing your physical fatigue.
Stress Fatigue
Stress will always be part of human life. It all boils down to how you will handle it and whether or not you will allow yourself to be eaten by it.
If you let stress take over your mind and body, then you might have a hard time juggling various responsibilities, set the stage for chronic fatigue, and allow it to take a toll on your physical health. Then, you will also experience difficulty in sleeping, lack of appetite, and heightened emotions among others.
You can do something about it. Meditation, exercise, finding a new hobby, and implementing a stress management program could help you a lot in overcoming this type of fatigue. Don’t let it consume you.
